Pauline: Mario's Original Damsel-in-Distress

A History of Pauline, from Donkey Kong to Super Mario

Lady, the Beautiful Girl 2

Pauline was introduced as "Lady" or "the Beautiful Girl 2" in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. She was the damsel-in-distress who was kidnapped by Donkey Kong. Mario, then known as Jumpman, had to rescue her. Pauline was a helpless character who could only scream and cry. However, she played an important role in the game's success.

Princess Peach's Predecessor

Pauline was replaced by Princess Peach as Mario's love interest in the Super Mario series. Peach was a more developed character who was able to fight alongside Mario. However, Pauline has made several appearances as a supporting character in recent Mario games. In 2017, she was featured as a playable character in Super Mario Odyssey.

Mario's Ex-Girlfriend

Pauline and Mario's relationship has been explored in several Nintendo games and media. In the game Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, it is revealed that Pauline is Mario's ex-girlfriend. However, they remain close friends.

Pauline is an important character in the history of the Mario franchise. She is the original damsel-in-distress and Mario's first love interest. Despite being replaced by Princess Peach, Pauline remains a popular character among Mario fans.
